In this unit we will explain saturated hydrocarbons, which are organic compounds of carbon and hydrogen with the maximum hydrogen/carbon ratio. We will focus our attention on alkanes, arranged in chains, and cycloalkanes arranged in rings. Owing to their molecular structure they are the least chemically reactive class of organic compounds. Nevertheless with some activation energy alkanes undergo important reactions such as combustion and halogenation. Thanks to combustion, hydrocarbons have become one of the most important sources of energy for human activities.
