ABSTRACT
The goal of the following unit is to give you a complete overview of the classification of igneous rocks. Igneous rocks can be classified in two main categories: intrusive rocks and extrusive rocks. Within each of these broad categories, the rocks are classified as acidic, intermediate, basic and ultrabasic on the chemical basis of their silica content or by their mineralogical composition, the proportions of lighter-coloured felsic minerals and darker mafic minerals.
